Re: Non-pulling back/lat exercises?
Not a direct answer to your question but I've found that hammer curls and Bent Over Rows supersetted in between exercises that would inflame my elbow helped with the pain tremendously. Further, after dealing with a particularly nagging elbow pain for nearly a week, my trainer had me do DB Row Hell S...

Re: 531 Deadlifts and an older lifter
If you are going into more volume on Deadlifts, I would start with a little lower weight training max than you are used to.

Re: Is this a good workout?
Beginners have different routines to follow to build the basics. The routine your buddy is doing is a more advanced program used to gain specific results after the basics/strength foundation is already there. All serious body builders have gone through basic strength training and continue to go back...

Re: 48 hours of recovery in workout programs
From my general understanding of the EXRX main site, the guides are there for beginners trying to get into healthy living. I would agree with most of the stuff on the main site in this aspect. Obviously, as the beginner develops into a more intermediate lifter, runner, etc., they would develop a rou...

Re: I need big arm
There's no reason he shouldn't work his arms if that's what keeps him coming back to the gym time after time. If he seriously works at an arm routine, he definately will get bigger in that area without the need for drugs, etc. That above statement depends of course on him continuing to keep his main...

Re: advice on running shoes
I've had a pair of Merrell's for nearly a year and a half now. They've held up pretty good. I wear them pretty much everywhere in addition to my workouts except during times of snow like it's been for the past week. Can't remember the exact type and I'm not wearing them now due to the snow. I'm quit...

Re: Personal Best Log
He wasn't completely clear, or maybe I wasn't completely clearly listening after the rep, lol. It's possible that I didn't completely lock out my legs with shoulders fully upright at the same time. It was rather heavy for me and felt like ages to grind the weight to the top. I felt my legs lock out ...

365 Deadlift! Trainer said it would have passed in competition.
Then pulled 385 and locked it out. Trainer said it wouldn't have passed in competition though.

Re: Personal Best Log

Last week
Squat 365x1 (moving close to 1000 total!)
Press 145x1 I've tried for 145x1 a couple times and failed. Finally just said screw it, the weights not being racked until it goes to full extension. Very happy with this one.

Congratulations on becoming a personal training. If I may ask, what training and/or certifications did you get to be a licensed personal trainer?

Re: Complementary strength training
Have you looked at Jim Wendlers 5/3/1 program? Pretty sure you could break that up into a 2xWeek. Would keep the presses to the beginning of the week and squat/deadlifts to the end of the week just to give your legs that extra day of recovery on Monday. So, Week 1: Tuesday - Press & Sunday - Squats,...

Re: I need big arm
Compound movements for beginners is definately the thing to do. I wouldn't do high reps but maybe a 3X5 or 5X5 setXrep scheme myself. If you are just starting out, you will continue to gain mass but you will also build a nice strength foundation too. If you wanted to add size to any specific body pa...

Re: 5x5 routine, overtraining?
Yeah, more muscle mass from strength training shouldn't impact your running.
