Re: Touching Your Toes

So he can fix the toe touch in "less than a minute," and we can find out how for the low low price of $99 for a DVD? I actually like Gray Cook — and would pay $99 to listen to him speak! — but this just smacks of the snake oil salesmanship that permeates this industry, unless I missed something in t...

Re: Can you progress if you don't know your weakness?

How often do you press? Strength is also a skill, and if you're not practicing the movement often enough it can be difficult to make sufficient progress. Beyond that, I don't know that I would say it's important to know your weaknesses to progress so much as it's important to program for your weakne...

Re: How are you training for the chinup challenge?

I'm getting an MRI on my left shoulder this month to hopefully finally solve the mystery. Since I've gotten a bit of a better handle on it, my goal is to actually ramp up my upper body training and gain some of the weight I've lost since the mystery pain started. As much as I'd like to do sets of 3-...

Re: What is the cheapest home gym equipment for a newbie?

I'd buy a basic Olympic barbell set, and look into a cheap set of racks and/or a bench. You can get really far with just a 300# weight set and some determination to use it. Agreed. I bought a 300# set for $300.00. Within 6 months I had bent the bar, but the plates are those handle types and will la...

Re: Chinup Challenge, 2013

Chin ups, 15. Kinda disappointed since I did 18 in December, but my shoulder was kinda hurting.

My goal is to do 15, but to increase my bodyweight by 5-10 pounds.

Re: Form check

I thought "retarded" is a medical term, that has been hijacked to be used to tease the actual mentally retarded, and bust balls. I pay more attention to the content My sis in law has Downs. She's mentally retarded. She's retarded. You better not call her that. I acted stupid, silly, retarded someti...

Re: Form check

It's hard to tell from this angle but it looks like you're letting your thoracic cage collapse on the down motion. The biggest change between your up phase and down phase is that on the way up you've lifted your chest well to engage your thoracic extensors, but it looks like after lockout you're rel...

Re: Random crap

A random training ramble. I've never spoke to or heard of a successful (define it however you want) athlete who hasn't had to overcome an injury. I don't just mean serious things like tears or breaks but, consistent aches and pains, too. I doubt I'd be where I am today, nor would I have studied so ...

Re: Trainer at my gym says....

Also, be aware that strong, untrained abs are going to be almost completely useless to you. You need trained abs that will work to resist compromising the spine as opposed to abs that can generate peak contractile force. Exercises like crunches aren't going to do much for your ability to maintain sp...

Re: Trainer at my gym says....

Hey e.n.rangel, It can be difficult sometimes to answer a fitness question in a straightforward manner because a lot of answers start with "it depends." Without the right information it can be really easy to look for answers in other parts of the program. That being said, I'll try my very best to an...

My hope is to look at several different screens individually, get people to score themselves, and look at how each screen can be approached.

Movement Screen - Deep Squat

So researchers at Clinimex-Exercise Medicine Clinic in Rio de Janeiro put a number of senior citizens through a very simple movement screen that assessed their ability to sit down and stand up with as little assistance as possible. They found that their simple screen was "remarkably predictive of ph...
