Re: Athletic Body in Balance

...Kelly Starret's approach: spend 5-10 minutes a day working on your business, and then lift to the best of your ability.... Isn't this exactly what Cook says? I'm talking about the specific corrective exercises in the FMS manual as opposed to Starret's corrective exercises. My post really wasn't ...

Re: Athletic Body in Balance

I do understand this because I used to think it but it's actually a misunderstanding (or use?) of the FMS. I should have been more clear that I do not mean to conflate the FMS and my statement about "specialists". The two are not connected, and I personally love the FMS. Most "specialists" have som...

Re: Gun Control

The version I heard was that the Australian crime rate/murder rate was in decline prior to the buyback and continued to fall at roughly the same rate following the buyback. It's possible that's true —although a 2006 25 year study shows otherwise — however the mass killings rate was not falling prio...

Re: Athletic Body in Balance

Oscar's point is one of my main gripes with "specialists" at gyms. Why are you spending 3 days a week mobilizing for squats if you're not going to do any? I use the FMS but I'm not a big fan of the corrections within* with the exception of the ASLR. I AM a big fan of Kelly Starret's approach: spend ...

Re: Gun Control

I've actually heard the oposite about the Australian buyback ... That while it succeeded in confiscating and destroying a large number of legally owned weapons (at great expense) it seemingly had little or no effect on the crime rate. The NRA ran a misinformation campaign using discredited "statist...

Re: Gun Control

This is only valid if one accepts the idea that the gun control measures being proposed would actually make us any safer. Supporters of gun control will argue that it does. Opponents will often argue that gun control actually increases crime. ... In fact, there's little evidence that gun control ha...

Re: Gun Control

The debate is kind of stupid anyhow. Americans are safer than they pretty much ever have been. The homicide rate in 2010 was the lowest it had been since it started being recorded, with 2009 levels equivalent to 1964. While mass killings are relatively new, the homicide rate is not soaring, and as a...

Re: Athletic Body in Balance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rc2E_jkuM8 This is a squat on all 4's. It's not really that analogous to a squat on all fours because you've taken the back angle/bar path out of the equation. Once the shoulders aren't restricted by keeping the load over the midfoot the hip joint doesn't have to clo...

Re: What are you avoiding ?

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. We are glad to see you here again. Thanks! You're right that it's a lot easier to create our own myths and have others believe them than it is to actually live them. Fooling yourself is a lot easier with company. Just like the emperor, as long as everyone is in ...

Re: What are you avoiding ?

The meaning behind this thread is a little different than I thought. I may be procrastinating on a shoulder MRI because I'm scared of the results, but I made a decision a long time ago to stop embracing mediocrity.  I pretty much subscribe to this: http://www.smbc-comics.com/comics/20120902.gif I'm ...

Re: What are you avoiding ?

I've been avoiding getting an MRI on my shoulder in the misguided hope that the right paramedical practitioner can "fix" me and I didn't do something serious. Being a 140 pound powerlifter was never the goal. But I'm always too busy at the gym to pick up the phone and make an appointment with my doc...

Re: vegan vs. vegetarian vs. omnivore

I was a vegetarian for nearly a decade, vegan for 5(ish?) years. I've got a lot to say on the subject, so I'll split it into two parts: Performance From a marco nutrient perspective, veg*nism lends itself better to endurance activities than it does to strength training. That said, there are vegetari...
