I have this problem too. My way of fixing it would probably abhor most people...but don't do cardio. Lift weights and just don't eat. I think its more for relaxation...like a spa or something. I don't know of too many people that think sauna's have real health benefits. Where I work we have one, with our pool and hot tub, and its just more to unwind after a hard workout.
The question is: WHY do you want to replace squats and deads? Probably because he wants to work his glutes more. That...and because I can do both lunges and step-ups here at my place...squats I must make a 30 min trip in order to do them and not pay a boatload of money for a gym membership or a bun...
Hmm...everyone is basically listing 20 exercises...why not just pick ONE exercise...not one for every muscle group. With that, I would say dumbell shoulder press...which is 50 lbsX 10 reps with each arm

I've put 50 pounds on a dip belt....then add to the bookbag and hold some with dumbells or something (like the last post). OF course, it might be a little awkward with all that weight in different places...
