Another thing I forgot to mention - try lifting straps for front squats.

Whatever you do, please keep squatting :)

Change of plans. I had my wife try doing front squats with an Olympic Barbell on Friday (up until now I had her using one of the light cardio bars from upstairs, just to learn the movement). She promptly dropped the bar and gave up, complaining that it was too heavy to support and that the bar was ...

Re: Help training my girlfriend

Problem 2: as a long term dancer she is extremely flexible, particularly the hamstrings, so does anyone have suggestions of some ham stuff I could do? I was gonna do SDLs or RDLs (my gym doesn't allow deads, but you can usually sneak those or their variations in) but she said she didn't feel anythi...

The Manta Ray solves the problem of the bar digging into my neck, but my groin muscles often feel tight when I perform regular back squats, which is strange, because I don't think it's a flexibility issue. Also, I have to concentrate hard on keeping my heels down to avoid tipping forward (this isn'...

I've done the SHELC. I used to do it by laying on the floor and putting my feet on the couch. It's a nice movement, but There would have to be a way to weight it to make it useful. You can use a rep progression, say 8-10-12-15-20 and then move on the a single leg shelc. You could also try holding a...

Before you decide to specialize, look in the mirror and ask yourself what you need more, shoulder mass or overall mass. I think for most people the answer is more muscle everywhere. Here is the most intelligent shoulder specialization program that I have ever seen: http://www.t-nation.com/findArticl...

I understand that you are trying to get a better understanding of training and at the same time want to caution you. Tempo is an not the most important variable. Keep your eye on the bigger picture.

Re: step ups & lunges?

The question is: WHY do you want to replace squats and deads? Probably because he wants to work his glutes more. That...and because I can do both lunges and step-ups here at my place...squats I must make a 30 min trip in order to do them and not pay a boatload of money for a gym membership or a bun...

In fact, I have a recent article on just this subect, entitled "Why Everyone Should Certify as a Personal Trainer", which may be of interest to you. Of course it's...

Re: When to change sets and reps?

I'm wondering when the most optimum time period to change sets and reps is. Right now I go for a month in one set/rep scheme, then change to another set/rep scheme for the next month before switching back. I'm looking for mostly hypertrophy and some strength gain. Do you feel that alternating betwe...

Re: step ups & lunges?

Are these two combined a good alternative to squats and deadlifts? They seem to work out the same areas...and work out my glutes more. They are not alternatives, they are complements. Generally speaking, you have to do squats AND deadlifts AND step-ups AND lunges. There is no way you will match the...

Due to lack of equipment I Zercher-squat with an EZ Curl Bar! The stance is pretty much the same as for front squats. I suggest you guys try it for variety.

I hold a dumbbell between my knees or between my feet. I have not tried this with more than 25lbs, but I am sure it will work.

Extra bonus: abs have to work harder.
