Thanks guys. What I am looking for is something where you take the wight of the person, and the 3 1RM for the bench, squat, and deadlift... compute it somehow and get a strength index number. Why are you looking for something like that? And what do you think it is going to tell you? And how did you...

Re: Leg Extensions vs. Squats

I'm interested in getting some opinions (or science) on a topic. Between the two exercises -- leg extensions and squats -- which one would recruit more muscle fibers in the quadriceps and place a greater tension load on those fibers? John Leg extensions are a worthless exeercise. Only in limited si...

I normally never disagree with Kenny, I usually don't disagree wth Tim but...:) but IMHO, it depends on your situation. If you are trying to gain weight, then yes. But if not, then I might steer clear of preworkout hi GI carbs. Reasoning being, , as Kenny stated, it will raise insulin, which shuts ...

Re: 2 questions

1.what is the difference between good carbs and bad carbs, from pre-workout and during workout energy point of view? Why is juice/oatmeal better than cola from the mentioned point of view? Carbohydrates are like tool in a tool box. You want to use the right tool for the right job. High glycemic ind...

I agree that not all stregth gains are the result of hypertrophy. However, if you keep adding weight to the bar you will inevitably pack on quality muscle. Conversely, any loss of muscle mass while dieting will be apparent in how much you can lift. Matt, good point. As I noted in the previous post,...

Re: whey at night

[Is it ok to have whey protein shake at night before going to bed for maximum muscle gains? Tim presented some good information on this. Let me add to it. Whey protein is digested between 20-100 minutes. The time it takes to digest it depends on if it hydrolyzed, cross flow or isloalte, or whey conc...

I've always measured muscle gain by how much I can lift and what I look like in the mirror. This may not be the most scientific method, but it does work. Measuring muscle mass increases by how much you can be deceptive. While increasing muscle mass will increase strength levels, the primary reason ...

Re: how many reps?

I am a skinny guy who wish to gain more muscle. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many reps would would begin to show results. As someone already posted, 3 sets X 8-12 reps with about two minutes rest periods between sets is used for bulding muscle, hypertrophy. Along with that, you got to eat mo...

Re: Stretching

a muscle cannot contract maximally if it is overactive (tight). This is incorrect. Reseach inidicates that stretching prior to a movement is counter productive to power output. Doing so inhibits the stretch reflex, mytatic reflex. The stretch reflex is like rubber bands. As Einstein noted for every...

I wouldn't get that technical with it. Try going as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds and then a jogging pace for 60 to 90 seconds. Then repeat a few times. Then maybe try to add another interval every week. If you can work up to 15 intervals of 30 seconds max and 60 seconds jogging, that's p...
