27 Dead hang chin ups, strict, no kipping with elbows passing the mid body line and chin over the bar. I did this in september 2008, I will test again in the next couple of weeks. (though I will probably lose a couple due to making a piggy of myself over christmas). Stats, 27 year old, 73kg, 178cm. ...

Daniel, I'd think about the military, namely, the US Navy SEALs and US Air Force Pararescue Jumpers for examples and guidance regarding your preparation. The Crossfit folks have some decent ideas, but, I'd look to some of the books on SEAL or PJ training in terms of how they prepare, physically. Ha...

Thanks for the feedback, but a couple of thoughts Firstly, what is adventure racing? Let me run through a very recent 8hour sprint race. 600m open water swim. 10km Run with 1000m elevation gain. Straight up a big hill 6km Run with 600m elevation drop. 2km approach run to a canyoning course, includin...

I did a bit of a test week this week, I seem to be able to recover quickly enough to perform the hard three day session. Oh my god those resistance sessions suck. By doing the strength training first and keeping rest to less than 60seconds really tired me out, I am guessing this was complete depleti...

Just to complicate it some more (and stir the pot) what about kipping pullups?

They introduce the hips into the motion too.

Shoes? People wear shoes to lift? Wow. I'll consider it. I am frequently told that I must wear shoes in my Gym. I am frequenly told it's for hygiene reasons. I always reply as I put my shoes on "When was the last time you showered your shoes". After lifting barefoot and even in flip flops (sneaking...

I keep some raw carrots in the fridge. Easy to eat, low carbs, lots of fibre and they don't need cooking. I also used to eat Greek yogurt when I could find it cheaply. Probably not the best for weight loss though. If you are not particularly bothered about physical performance, something like the pa...

OK, after a bit of reading and postponement of beginning the program by 1 week (I travel to a meeting most of this week ) I am considering a hybrid complex/strength (complexes followed by strength) workout which will look like the following: Mon: Barbell Complex (6 exercises, 6 reps). Bench Pr...

I like the pushup, normally I make it harder by raising my feet on a bench and using dumbbells to increase the required depth and core strength required. I used to do them in the British army (reserves) too. Standard 1.5mile run, 2mins push ups and 2 mins of sit ups. I remember being able to push ou...

I know this doesn't help much and apologies if it's a stupid question, but I felt I had to ask. Are you doing all that running because you enjoy it? Or just to lose some fat? If you enjoy it then I completely respect that. If it's with the aim of improving body composition then I would have to advi...

Weight training to compliment running

The new year is upon us, I have rested (and ate:D) for the last two weeks following a basic 8-12 week regime which I have built very basic aerobic endurance and strength. I would like some advice for the new years AR training program which will look approximately like this for the first week. Mon : ...

Blood acidity and nutrition

Over on another thread I spoke with Ironman and JungleDoc regarding blood acidity levels, specifically foods which cause blood acidity. I have been following a strict paleo diet with athletic modifications for the last couple of weeks and generally feel better, eg. the acne I suffer (at 27yo) has al...

DoD researcher P.A. Deuster in research used to develop preparation for the US Navy's BUDs course (Navy seals) suggests that sleep deprivation will not adversely affect physical performance until at least 96 hours of sleep deprivation. However, it will affect mental ability after approximately 12 h...

This is from the top of my head, but I will check with the book at home this evening. I'd like to see it. I read that book - by Loren Cordain and Joe Friel, IIRC. It's good, but I really felt like it was so closely aimed at endurance athletes that I couldn't make it work for me. My needs aren't for...
