100% unsweetened cocoa powder

Post by bob » Fri Apr 24, 2009 3:02 pm

I was interested to know for those of you who use 100% unsweetened cocoa powder, what type of foods have you mixed it with to hide the bitterness? I tried some this morning with my protein powder which has a tad bit of sugar to buffer the taste, but it was till way too bitter. Also, it doesn't mix well by hand. I like the fact it is a powerful antioxidant.

Ugh, I use a mixture of oats, peanut butter, ON brand vanilla whey, cocoa, and sweetener packet. Tastes great.

I just like the taste so...

...but one thing that helps mask the flavor is a stronger one. Cinammon, for example, or mixing it in with a chocolate flavored protein mix, or in a with a banana into a carb/protein post-workout shake, or something similar.

Thanks guys. I'll give your suggestions a try. Anything has to be an improvement over straight powder!

This is the drink i made this afternoon with the cocoa powder. I was apprehensive to try the concoction at first because of how bitter the cocoa powder is, but it came out tasting good.

One cup non-fat milk
5-6 whole almonds
one large strawberry
one tbsp organic peanut butter( good price on this at Costco. 2 28 oz. jars for about $7.00)
one tsp 100% unsweetened cocoa powder
one scoop chocolate Designer Whey
1/2 tsp Saigon cinnamon (10.7 oz for $2.99 i believe. Also at Costco Cheap!)

That cinnamon is the same one I use. It's really powerfully flavored. I had to ratchet down the amount I used in my food because of that. It'll mask cocoa bitterness pretty easily.

It is strong, but I like it that way. I use it in my oatmeal in the morning also. I probably use about 2 tsps a day total. I hope that's not too much cinnamon intake.
