Protein on a Strict Budget

Hey guys,
It is summer classes time. I am living off campus so I don't have a meal plan. So far the only cheap protein rich foods I am finding is eggs, cheese and milk. Any advice on what other foods to look for to get the most quality-protein-bang for my buck? Tuna is on my list, but it really is not that cheap for the cans I have seen.

Also, get to know your butcher/deli/fish supplier. Get the left over ends and use them for soup or chowder.

If by cheese, you mean "cottage cheese" then yeah... regular cheese is more fat than protein most of the time. 2% cottage cheese is mostly protein.

Also, that chili con carne stuff that comes in a can that says "98% fat free" is cheap as fv(k and somewhere around 46g of protein per can.

Egg whites. I buy the pre-made and just have a pint straight with a huge amount of veggies mixed in (whole pan full to a couple layers deep).

chicken breasts: Use the George Foreman and grill the pack of 3 at once. cut them in half. then use on salads, in sandwhickes etc. Each half breast is 100 calories and about 20g protein. Very convenient for the math!

Carbmaster yogurt from Kroger: 12g of protein, 80 calories and only 40 cents! ( I buy about 30 every few days!) Actually take my shopping cart and shove it against the cooler (with opened door) and just shovel them in. maybe I should ask about getting cases from the back!

FF feta: almost pure protein (not sure if cheap)

FF cream cheese: almost pure protein (not sure if cheap)

My Kroger also has some very cheap defrosted fish (less than 2 dollars per pound).

Personally I don't really buy the "need to have 1+ g of protein per pound". There's a lot of disagreement on that and it seems very possible that the RDA types might be right. I do have a bit more than RDA (usually 150 per day, but if I'm down to 100, I don't sweat it). So maybe just decide to have less? :lol:

There's also a good novel called King Rat by James Clavell. Give it a read. :wink:

Beef mince, I think Americans called it ground beef. Cheap as chips it is, you can buy a big pack of it and it'll do you like three meals plus you can bulk it up cheaply adding onions, kidney beans etc. Eat three meals of it a day, drink loads of whole milk and you're pretty much there.

Wouldn't be much meat on a vegetarian i would of thought they're quite a high fat content!

And you should try to get grass-fed rather than grain-fed vegetarians. They provide a better O-3 to O-6 ratio.

Also, you should note that vegetarians are protected species in some jurisdictions.

Funny that people question my suggestion about vegetarians, but don't comment on the Twizzlers. This shows how far we've come, that everyone just accepts that Twizzlers are a good source of protein.

Interesting about the canned mackerel. I'm definitely going to pick up a ton of that. Great protein, n-3, lots of vitamins and minerals. Nice find.
