keeping carbs around workout window

if you're trying to keep your carbs around your workout window, how close to your workout should you eat them? An hour? Two?

Depends on the source really, simple sugars are absorbed within 15 minutes of consuming. I have a dextrose and whey shake sometimes about 15 mins before training if it's been a while since I've eaten.

that's interesting, do you know what sort of time absorption takes for like brown rice and things like that?

I'm just speculating but I think what matters most is how many carbs to eat before. You probably want to top up your glycogen stores and then have them depleted by the end of your workout. Too many carbs would mean the glycogen wouldn't be depleted enough in a short (30-60 minute) workout to provide the proper hormonal change that you should get.
