DEXA Body Scan Test

Post by TimG » Sun Aug 13, 2017 4:32 pm

I had a DEXA Body Scan (Hologic) performed, but am puzzled about interpreting the numerous results. The facility where I had this performed (Washington Institute of Sports Medicine http://www.washington-institute.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) provided some basic information and interpretation. Can any of you refer me to a link where detailed DEXA result interpretation is available?

I am particularly confused about the visceral fat measurement. There seem to be no reference ranges, although the basic interpretation is the lower the visceral fat, the better. Here are my results:

VAT mass 890 grams ( 2 lbs)
VAT volume 962 cm3
VAT area 185 cm2

Do any of you recommend any home Body Composition Scales. If I continue to get DEXA scans, they cost $90 each. How often should I get one done, that is not too frequent or too infrequent?

If you need further information about me to make an informed recommendation, let me know and I'll provide it.

Cheaper body composition scanners are largely agreed to be mostly useless. Dexa is the "gold standard" right now. I would suggest simply getting scanned as it plans out with your program--aka at the end of a bulk and then at the end of your cut to see what your actual fat loss was.
