Gross versus Net

What is the significance and the difference of the Gross versus Net calories burned on the Walk / Run calculator? I never know which to use.

Gross includes the calories you would burn from doing nothing. That's useful if you're trying to add up all your calories for the day. Net just included the incremental calories from the exercise itself.
