Cycling and weight training

Post by Dean » Wed Feb 08, 2006 5:14 pm

Not sure if I'm submitting this right, but here goes. I've just starting weight training. I don't go to a gym (I can't afford it) and I don't have any gear. I use my own body as weight, I trust you understand. And I invent Weights to lift using Brush sticks and 5 litre bottles filled with water. Don't laugh!
Anyway thats a whole different story. My question is this. I currently cycle 20 miles round trip to get to work every day. Do I still train my legs using weights? I ask because if muscle is built up while the muscle is at rest, my legs are getting no rest during the week because of the daily 20 mile cycle ride. The only rest my legs would get is at the weekend. I really want to build up some bulk in my legs because they are possible the skinnyest you've ever seen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, train your legs with weights. The cycleing will not affect it.

I know a lot of spinners. They do their thing on the spin bike, and yes, it's great for stamina, endurance and hill racing, but almost all of them do some type of squatting, Yes, IMHO, include it in your program.

You can also try supplementing some extra protein into your diet for adding muscle. Just dont over do it with supplements, try finding the extra protein in the foods you buy such as chicken or fish.

Might be a good idea to train legs on Fridays so you have the weekend to recover. Otherwise, your legs will be killing you on your way to and from work the day after squatting.
