2x10 or 3x8?

I'm doing a routine where I rotate rep and set schemes every two weeks. The first two weeks are heavier 5x5s, followed by two weeks of the same exercises with higher reps and lighter weights. During the second, higher rep period, should I do two sets of ten or three sets of eight? Or...will it make any difference?

Good question. I still don't know where these actual figure came from, but here is what I would do, FWIW. Do your first 5X5 cycle, the do a cycle of 2X10, then hit your 2nd 5X5 cycle, then do a cycle of 3X8. Just as an off the wall example to put things into perspective, first 5X5 with top weight of 160, then a cycle of2X10 w/100, 2nd 5X5 w/180, then 3X8 w/135. These numbers were just randomly picked, so don't even try to copy them, but I think you get the idea of step loading.

FWIW - i have used a similar step loading principle that TimD described when i competed. I actually used this method to periodize and "peak" at competition time. It worked quite well actually. Again - the numbers were different, set/reps a little different, but the concept overall was the same and worked very well.

Other than that - i'd say try anything and mix it up a bit. You won't know how it works until you give it a serious try.
