would like to try beginner free weight routine

I would like to try one of the beginner free weight routines, but i'm concerned about my back. I had an injury several years ago to the L5 (lower back) area. Are there any exercises i should avoid? Which back exercises can i do which won't aggravate my lower back?

My advice, get your medical records in hand, and go to a sportsmed oriented physician or physiotherapist, go over what has happened, and have them advise you on a course of action.
