Question about HIIT

Post by recmatt » Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:06 am

Ideally, how long should a HIIT session last? I am only doing 20 minutes at the moment but am thinking of gradually increasing it to 30-40. And how often? Is 2 or 3 times a week enough? My primary goal is to lower my body fat. I'm also doing 2 weights sessions a week.

I don't know if there's a magic number that should be used for the length of HIIT sessions, but the idea is to keep them as brief as possible. Rather than lengthening the sessions, you should up the intensity if you need more stimulation.

When I do interval training (not HIIT), I keep the sessions to 30 minutes or less.

My HIIT track workouts (as close to 100% sprint the straightaways, jog the turns) usually can only last about 15 minutes max, and that's with several months of training. If you are doing HIIT running, I don't think you should go much further than 15 minutes. You might want to bump up the intensity on the sprints.
