if someone doesn't deadlift, squat, or do rows, should emphasis still be placed on the lower back muscles?

your lower back muscles should be worked the same amount as your abs. you want to maintain a balance between the front and back of your core muscles. you will become stronger in your other lifts with a strong core.

Nah. What good are they if you don't dead, squat or row? Standing erect isn't important. Being able to lift things is highly over-rated. And don't forget and try military presses, or any other overhead work, cause that needs erectors, too. Oh. And walking. Walking is no big deal, either.

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU NOT DEAD, SQUAT OR ROW? I mean, I can think of reasons why you might not be able to do any one of those, but why none of them? Quadriplegia? Do you lift weights at all?

Why are you not squating, deadlifting or doing any rows?? I would say they're pretty important excercises to be doing!!

Those are very important mass builder exercises. If you don't do those you might as well stay at home and let the muscles in your back and legs atophy so you become a hunch back and have horrible back pain.

I agree with the other commenters. Feel free to do the standard geek workout of bench presses, bicep curls and ab work, and let two thirds of your muscles sit idle.

It could be the OP just does a lot of machine work. If that is the case, ad the lower back machine to your workout. Once you progress a little, it is time to start trying free weights. Just start out light until you get the hang of it.

However if you are doing the frat brat workout, I suppose it doesn't really matter. A lot of people don't listen until they have shoulder problems because of a muscle imbalance and their doctor refers them to a specialist who then sets them straight.

In this guy's defense...I don't do squats. Well typical squats at least. Some overhead squats with plate loaded dumbells. I throw weights in this plastic trunk I have for deadlifts, and do reverse push ups for rows. Perhaps he doesn't have access to standard gym equip.

it was just a hypothetical question. my friend just moved and no longer has access to barbells and plates--only dumbbells--and plans to do some alternative exercises instead of squats, deadlift, etc. cause there's not enough weight. so he was curious about the lower back muscles. which i didn't know the answer to...

Well, if he stops DLing, he loses one of the big back exercises right there. There is still a lot that one can do without barbells. There have been several threads here about exercise without weights, and there are websites devoted to that topic. Single-leg variants of both squat and DL can be done, and most of us would use less loading than we would with traditional versions, so perhaps the DBs would be enough.

Deads: some of the same. Long stride lunges and step-ups are supposed to hit your G max more.

I hope your friend doesn't expect to get the same results from a light dumbbell workout that he would get from one that uses heavy barbells. Because he won't.
