Here's an interesting follow up. I recently changed my program a bit and incorporated some lateral raises on my military press day. Just one set of 10-12 (to failure) to finish off the workout.
Interestingly, after doing full body workouts for several months with no direct lateral delt work, I could immediately do a heavier weight than when I used to do lat raises as part of an upper/lower split!
So doing row/press type movements as part of a full body workout has in fact strengthened my lateral delts.
