I understand. At the gyms I have been too, the bars and plates are not smooth. Even when they were new they were rough. So I don't usually bother. But obviously if I had weights that were very smooth, I would always use collars.

the first time i didn't use the collars (out of laziness) on a curl bar, i dumped my weights. the plates slid off like they were greased, so since then i won't forgo them.

occasionally i see people benching or whatever without them and i wonder why, since it doesn't take much effort to put them on and NOTHING makes you look stupider in a gym than dumping weights on the floor.

As a note I use collars on the weights all the time. However, just to play the devil's advocate, which is worse? Possible injury and rehab or looking stupid for five minutes?

This discussion is like the chicken and the egg, someone will always find a way to argue either side. Fun tho! lol

As a compromise, I've decided to use collars on the left end of the bar from now on. My right arm is stronger than my left, so it's more likely to be higher, thus less likely to lose weights off of that end. Besides, with the collar on the left, that side will be heavier.

Actually, it usually works the other way around, since the lower arm takes a higher percentage of the load.
