The Pull Up Challenge, 2011
Moderators: Ironman, Jungledoc, ianjay, stuward
Phil (Proper Knob--I've been meaning to ask what that means) posted this link in his Journal Discussions thread, in response to my comment on his recent PR:
http://jasonferruggia.com/jens-new-chin-up-pr/
I said something about let's keep it quiet, so give us a competitive edge in the pull-up challenge. But of course, a successful challenge is when as many people as possible meet their goals, so I'll share it here.
I'll test my own PR this afternoon, and then I'll start compiling a list of those participating in the challenge.
By the way, Jason Ferruggia's website and blog are very good. I've seen some of his article on T-Nation over the years, but his own site is even better. Brief, very simple and practical posts on relevant (at least to me) topics, and an attitude that I really like. I hadn't been aware of it until I read this chin-up post, and then started reading more of his back posts.

Here's where the challenge stands as of today (which is tomorrow for most of you--I guess we can see into the future). Where you haven't stated a specific goal, I'll put down 10% above your reported PR, rounded to the nearest rep.
Proper Knob--PR 14 narrow "semi neutral". Goal=15
robertscott--he's in, but hasn't reported a PR or goal
wilburburns--in, but no PR or goal yet
Jebus--will do weighted pulls, but no PR reported yet
jml--current PR 11, but testing soon.
slashnul--PR 10 pullups. Goal=11
Travis--PR s sets of 10--do you want to test a single-set max?
pdellorto--PR 16 chinups (I believe). Goal=17+. That is now official.
robt-aus--PR 7 pullups, close grip. Goal=8
Ryan A--in, but no PR or goal yet
KPj--PR 18. Or is it 20? What is it, really?
stuward--PR 10. Goal is to be able to do 10 daily for 5 days.
bam--7 wide grip pullups. Goal 8
jungledoc--PR 12 chinups. Goal 13. Maybe 14.
Velcropop--6 unspecified grip. Goal 8.
Rikblades--to retest soon
Kab3261--5 close-grip chins. Goal 7.
Nkkip--counting-challenged. Will retest in a few days.
So test (if necessary) a PR in the variation of your choice, and start training February 1. OK, ok. I know that you've all started hitting the pullup bar already.
Matt?
Ironman?
Jason?
Kenny?
Stephen?
Hoosegow?
Nygman
caangelxox?
Rucifer?
Nightfall?
Nevage?
Johnny?
Wouter?
Anyone?
It's not too late!
Edited for updates and spelling!

Okay, i'm in.
My PR is 10 @ BW in a row with a medium supinated grip, i've not tested this in a while, but i'm pretty sure I can still do that. I'll test in the next couple of days.
Presently i've been doing a 5x5 type routine and i'm at 6,6,6,6,5 so an improvement in either would be great. As soon as I break 5x6 i'll add weight.

My goal is 17+. I'm heavier than when I set my 16-rep record, so even one more rep would be nice. I'm around 195 now, I was 191-192 then.
And yeah, Jason Ferrugia's blog is great. He's another great S&C guy in New Jersey. NJ gets ragged on but we make people strong around here. :D

Updates have been edited into the list in the earlier post.
It doesn't matter how new you are--it's good to have everyone participate!
We know that Karen is relatively new to weight training, in nearing 50, has an irregular schedule, and that she trains in her living room.
Nkkip--I've seen a few comments from you on various things, but I don't really know much about you. How about a brief intro?

Sure, what do you want to know? I'm a 20 year old Dutch computer science student. I started lifting and eating healthier in August 2010. Figured it was time I put some mass on my frame. My lifts are progressing nicely, my bodyweight is increasing slowly. Could have been a lot more, but I have trouble eating big.
Anyway, I rarely have anything to contribute, so I don't post too often. And whenever I run into something, I always do my own research, so I never really feel the need to make threads.

Not easy at all! Going from 1 to 2 is a 100% increase! Get a tension band that allows you to do several reps, and read the Jason Ferruggia article that I linked above, and look on his site for other pull up articles. There's one about using bands.Jebus wrote:My max pull-up is 1, this should be easy to beat.
