Protein Powder: What kind do you use?

Post by johnbu1981 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 9:48 pm

I use IsoPure unflavored. It has 25g of protein per scoop, and zero carbs/fat... I figure I can get my fat and carbs from my meals.

Tastes like chalk when I dissolve it in water, but I think it does its job.

Now Sports unflavored, mostly because I can get it for about $10.00/lb, which is the best I've found so far. Also zero fat and carbs, because it is "Isolate" as opposed to "concentrate."

Of course, it tastes awful, so I often put ice cream in, which makes me wonder why I don't just get a brand with fat in it....

If you're going to use both whey and cassein, why not just use milk?

Does it really matter THAT much about what kind of powder? As long as its got high protein and no added bull$h1t like the really cheap stuff has surely the difference is negligible?

Unless the more expensive ones really do have much higher quality/added ingredients?

I don't think it matters as long as its not filled with added sugars.

I think this link explains it best:

http://www.fitnessatlantic.com/whey_pro ... _facts.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

All of these whey powders come from, of course, whey. What distinguishes them is how the protein is extracted from the fat its tied up with. According to the link, the zero fat on the label is not so much about fat but tells you the process they used, no fat is the result of the process that is least damaging to the protein molecules themselves and produces the highest concentration.

So when figuring price, I try to find the cheapest zero fat powder that is an "Isolate" instead of a "concentrate". That's the overall best value for the money.

Be sure to pay for the premium flavors!

100% protein, delivered to my door for less than $10 a pound.

That website is really neat, I think I will place an order, looks a lot cheaper than what I'm paying and I can buy in bulk.

What type of protein do you use? Do you add any supplements?

I'm a beginner at this so I wanted some advice on what type of mix ya'll think would be best for fat loss/muscle gain.

I'm trying to get down to my goal weight of 190. Right now I'm 6'4 215, but not much muscle tone.

Eric that is a great site. Plain Whey protein, delivered to Canada is about $90/10 lbs which is about what I pay now. The possible additions are great. The supplements are really cheap. It will take a little thinking to put together a good mix. If anyone has tried this and has come up with a potion that works, for whatever purpose, and tastes good, maybe they would post their formula.

Overwhelming for me. But I too would be interested in some good mixes to fit needs.

Give me a couple to copy paste the mixes I use, but some tips while I eat supper:

Don't mix any waxi maze in anything. That stuffs tastes like filthy foot.
The super expensive casin (peptopro) tastes like death, and from what I understand not worth the money as something about absorbed too fast in the gut or whatever, blah blah balh.

I tried 5% flax once, smells funny but tastes okay.
I tried 5% Phsyilliam husk. Works great, but then I got the runs for a week and could only "eat" liquids. The fiber in the shakes, plus my stomach issues, was bad bad news. Now I get the fiber separate.

PAY FOR THE FLAVOR. Either the $.75 or $1 flavors are good. Otherwise, drink at your own risk.

Don't go crazy with blends. Read around the trueprotein forums, they are VERY VERY helpful overthere and you will find most answers there.

There customer service is top notch. They messed up a flavor on 50lbs, and gave me 10% off my next order.

You can use people's codes for 5% of your order, and if you buy 16lbs or more you get an additional 5%, so if you buy in bulk and use the code you get 10% off every order. Look around http://www.intensemuscle.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for people's codes. I like to pimp ScottMcd's code because he helped me the most with my first order. I'll put up his code later.

(Lyle McDonald also has a code, don't quote me but I believe it is "lyle") But forget that, he makes enough money, and wins free proptein EVERY MONTH. Help out Scott, he is a younger (poorer) dude. (I assume Lyle makes a decent wage, but don't really know, he doesn't seem to sell out.)
