competition

Post by The_dog_mom » Mon Oct 31, 2011 10:30 am

I saw this posted at the gym today. I am defiantly going (as a spectator) to scope this out. If It looks good I may set my sights on entering next year.

I'm guessing you meant "definitely", though if you want to go defiantly I can admire that as well.

That would depend on if someone told me I could not go;-)

Another one for auto correct! I get in yes mode sometimes.

WOW! It was great. I will summarize

Saw the 67 yo Mike Lawson break the American powerlifting record for bench press for his age / weight class

An attempt and fail (not by much) for the record in squat the guy was from Kill Devil Hills NC and was only 22 and tried I think over 600#

There were lots of women competing I think about 20%. Much more than expected.

There were lots of older guys participating.

Most important Lesson:

Next year I can do this! I am really good for my age and weight
.

Not good for pictures or video because they have too many people standing around the person lifting.

You should be able to do well, and if nothing else, it will be a good learning experience. The Masters should have a weight class for you, and you might be the only one competing in it. Some tips from bad choices of mine over the years, if you are going to consider competing.
1. Might want to get some help from a local PL club in your area, for honing up on technique I know there are several where you live.
2. Get an experienced competitor ( Kenny C can help with this over the internet) in determining starting, 2nd and final attempts. This is necessary to make sure you at least get on the board, and don't bomb. Something a bit lower than you feel comfortable with a double or triple in the gym might be a good starter, then bumbp it from there, but your best bet would be to get the numbers with someone experienced that has actually seen you train and can somewhat feel out your abilities.
Good training for your first competition.

Well, it would be a bit of a trip for me.

based on the time of this post, I'll chalk it up to sleep posting.

I'll be there if Merle Haggard and Lea Michelle are both doing a concert in the area that weekend
