Variation of Cable Straight Arm Pulldown

Post by txomin » Tue Aug 30, 2016 1:02 am

Hello everyone. I have visited the site & forum searching for info many times over the years and would like to thank everyone for the effort.

My question.

I've seen folks at the gym doing what appears to be a variation of the cable straight arm pulldown that I cannot make sense of.

Using the ExRx video in the page for Cable Straight Arm Pulldown above as comparison (sorry, I'm not authorized to post url links), these guys stand straight rather than bent forward. Also the pulley is not above their heads but at waist level and the range of motion makes the arms travel from front to back. They also use long ropes so that the movement can continue just beyond the gluts.

So, other than the arms remaining straight, it appears to be a very different exercise.

If anyone can make sense of this explanation, I would appreciate comments regarding the muscles it targets and even if it makes sense at all.

Thank you guys.

Is this what you mean? http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Latissi ... lover.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or maybe this? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/23 ... 47d9c9.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Both exercises are essentially the same, both work the extension movement except the range is different. The second one is into hyperextension. http://exrx.net/Articulations/Shoulder.html#Extension" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, the pic with the woman is the one, but with the pulley even lower.

Would be it correct to say that this variation hits the lats less and the delts, pecs, and triceps more? Or would hyperextension imply something else, like greater engagement of the erectors? I'm just trying to make sense of it.

I think it's foolish and serves no purpose. I don't know what muscles it would hit. Perhaps lower traps, I'm not sure.
