That includes travelling time and I get my training done within those hours. I work 2 jobs just now, full time job and i'm trying to build a personal training business out with that, which I do at nights and weekends. The gym charge a fixed rent for trainers to work there. To give an idea, it's the same I pay for a mortgage I have on a house I rent out. At first you need to take every and any lead going to get your client base up enough to cover the rent consistently. When I first started it I took every lead I could for just over 6 months, so almost every available time slot was filled. Anything left is when I would train. My gym shuts at 10 but gets cleaned for 30 mins afterwards, so a lot of my training is during that 30 minutes at the end.

It's generally not a problem to get a training session in on a Saturday (gym shuts at 6 on a Sat), and I normally train on a Sunday which I try and keep off, so, during the week I just need to find a minimum of 2 time slots for my own training, then I know I can get everything done.

It's calmed down a lot recently as I stopped taking leads. I have a small base of what you could call "grade A" clients, which are the one's that buy into my training philosophy, turn up consistently, and are keen to work hard. They "want" to train. A lot of people use a trainer because they don't "want" to train and making an app with someone will force them. Generally these one's can drain the life out of you but some of them will get the bug and go on to become great clients. I've barely taken more than 3-4 leads since January and am just ticking over with my own base of clients, covering costs comfortably, and having some more free time. So, for example, I block off tues/wed 9pm, plus fri 8pm, and sat from 4pm. If I get a spare hour I'll typically do extra work. I don't schedule in a Sunday so if I train on Sunday it's a "do whatever I want day" or a "fill in the gaps" day. I'm not typically fully booked every night now, which is intentional, although it happens when clients need to reschedule. I also try and keep a Sat more free now, so i'll only book in a few sessions at most.

The training isn't the biggest challenge, it's the diet. This has suffered big time. However, i've been trying to improve everything recently which has made me realise just how much more efficiently I could of done everything - from writing goals for myself, to preparing food, to "batching" work like writing programs, and generally organising my time better. "if you fail to plan then you plan to fail" is the moral of the story, really. Right now i'm just stepping back and evaluating, really, before I put my foot back on the gas.

Reflex make a really good protein flapjack, you should buy a couple of crates of those (they're like 20bucks for 24). 20 grams of protein per bar. I stick a couple in my bag and take them to work/uni in case of dietary emergencies

KPj--are you thinking that you will quit the "day job" at some point? If you're covering rent at the gym, additional clients will increase your income. I have no idea if you could earn what you're getting now in your job, just curious.

My original motivation was to test my passion. I was aware that there was a big difference between someone who "loves training" and someone who "loves training people". I figured making my life much more difficult to be able to do this part time would be a good way to test my passion. I also wasn't in a position where I could just jump ship anyway and, it's a big decision. My current job has a lot more potential for income. But I don't enjoy it. Basically I realised one day that, when you do the math, you actually spend most of your life working. I never really had anything I was particularly interested in or enjoyed until I started training. I also have the pleasure of knowing quite a lot of successful people and, the one thing they all have in common is passion and hunger. I don't have that for my day job, as much as I used to try and kid myself. I can be driving to gym after work, almost falling asleep at the wheel, even feeling run down or slightly ill, and as soon as I walk in and meet my first client, something changes. Next thing I know it's 4 hours later, my head is "buzzing"/hyper, and it felt like 30 minutes, not 4 hours. Anyway, turns out i'm just even more obsessed, now.

So, yes, I want to do this full time.

I had originally estimated it would take me 6 months to get to where I am just now - covering rent comfortably, with a solid base of good, reliable clients. I was always going to go crazy and do everything I could to get here, then step back and re-evaluate and decide how I was going to make the switch to full time trainer. I got there but, took double the time! In the process, a lot of the "unplannable" and even unthinkable happened. Right now i'm stepping back, focusing only on current clients, not actively trying to get more. There's so much I need to improve on, particularly the business side of things. I also want to create some "products" based on little gaps in the market/gym I have seen. I also need to spend more time with family right now. The truth is, right now I know exactly what I want to do, i've just not quite figured out how i'm going to do it. I am much closer than i've ever been, though.

I could of just said "yes" but as we all know I like to ramble :thumbright:

1.25 inches of rain yesterday. It wasn't near enough, but it probably averted a disaster.

My sister just called me because she likes to infuriate me/make me laugh (depends what she tells me and what mood i'm in).

She was on the way back from a work lunch with workmates. Right now, she's decided she needs to "reign it in" a little, so she's went ultra low carb. Basically first phase Atkins, although that wasn't her intention. She never realised she was pretty much doing this until I mentioned it, so she just tells people she's "on Atkins". She's a week in but, she had to go to this work lunch which generally she can't be bothered with.

Her department (only 3 other women) are all obese diet guru's. They think Atkins is "dangerous". "it's not good for you"...... "and the weight just comes back" (when people say this, you know for sure they never actually read the book and just used the first phase until insanity ensued).

So, she ordered a beef wrap which had veg in it, and a salad. She didn't eat the wrap, so ate the beef, veggies, and salad. She then got lectured about how unhealthy her diet was.

This doesn't seem funny at first, until you realise that 3 fat people were lecturing 1 fit person for eating beef, veg, and a salad..

On an only partially related note, last week my BIL came to me to inform me that Kate Middleton went "on my diet" to lose weight, and that the royal doctors (or whatever they are called) are all so worried with the terrible, terrible toll it will exact on her health.

Of course there is no frakking way I know what diet she actually used, not even in the most generic way, as I strive to completely ignore what VIPs of all kinds are doing or avoiding. In his mind everyone who's not on the WHO sanctioned diet of "healthy grains" must be on a meat-laden "hyperproteic" diet.

Not that he's following it, anyway as of course his diet is one of the most awful shipwrecks I know of. Basically it's like he has not evolved at all in that respect since he was a 15 yo. I also had the chance to reflect on how other people haven't get rid of their old unsophisticated selfs for certain facets of themselves, and haven't had a positive change in over 20 years.

And this reminds that no matter how much I might feel I have made great progress, there surely must be things in me which others think the same of me, that I have not evolved at all. And I'm sure their attention can only stick to those things rather than all the ways I got better.

sometimes I think I know everything there is to know about training, then I learn something that totally changes how I train.

For example, I read some stuff recently about how doing some light core activation stuff can instantly relieve a tight lower back and hamstrings. Now every time my back feels a little tight I do a set of bird dogs and it goes away. A few sets of that before deadlifting and my back feels better than it has in years!

just goes to show, the internet is for so much more than just pornography

Who in their right mind would call an ex a Bird Dog?

Saw some runner guy training well past midnight. He was dressed the part, ignored the ample sidewalk and ran on the narrow-ish road despite some light traffic.

I saw a guy with one leg doing cable exercises yesterday ... looked like an above-the-knee amputee (no prostetic). He came in on crutches, but spent his workout hopping around from one piece of equipment to the next.

I cooked and ate liver for the first time, it was really good. I don't know why it has a general dislike...
