I was watching some old WW2 footage of recruits doing physical training a few weeks ago. They were all doing squats with logs on their backs, below parallel. The other night I was watching a more modern (2000s) video of recruits doing PT and they were not going below parellel. Sad.

Squatting is both primitive and instinctive. It should be relatively effortless. Modern lifestyle robs us of our natural function because it takes away the need to explore our movement abilities - 'cause we sit on our a$$e$ way too much, and not on our heels like the old days.

remember my thread about climbing ropes? Well the powers that be in my gym took the rope down because people kept swinging on it. Instead of punishing the people doing the swinging, they got rid of the rope so now no one can climb it. Great.

Also, two guys had their memberships suspended for throwing kettlebells at each other. What's that all about?

I cracked up just from the title! Unfortunately, The Onion is blocked by our firewall, so I can't see the actual article, but I sure enjoyed the title.

WASHINGTON—Confirming years of speculation, a new study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Health Monitoring System has found that red meat significantly increases the risk of premature death in cows. "Our research suggests that by having red meat, a cow's life can be shortened by as many as 10 years, sometimes more," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in an interview with CNN Tuesday. "Unfortunately, in some cases, even just a single daily serving of red meat can hurt a cow's chances of surviving past the earliest stage of life." On a more positive note, researchers found that other high-protein foods like milk, cheese, and butter only decrease a cow's life by 7 to 9 years.

I'm currently in Yellowknife. I just had eggs, bacon and coffee in the hotel restaurant and was charged $15. That's as bad as Toronto.
