USDA Food Program Sucks

I sat through an afternoon learning how to administer a Food Program for Children..

Skim or 1% milk is the only approved milk for anyone over the age of 1.

Bacon is not an approved form of protein or not even a meat in their eyes.

And that's just a beginning to why it sucks.. No wonder so many children are overweight..

Cliff, you wouldn't want your kids to eat that evil saturated fats. They should be filling up on sugar, enriched of course.

The Worst statement I heard related to 1% and Skim Milk actually having MORE Vitamins than whole milk.

"That's because they add more vitamins after they remove the fat" - Yes, that is their quote not mine.

I'm very thankful my girls enjoy sporting activities, because the foods they are given as "Healthy" are lousy.

Just make sure they leave the house full of good food in the morning and come home to good food at night.

Politicians continue to believe that nutrition and every other complex system (like the economy) can be controlled by applying known interventions. Well the experts they're listening too are wrong. These systems are chaotic and what works in one case won't work in another. They also don't understand that they're being played in a big game by big business. The decisions they're making are solely aimed at making money for those with money already. Denmark got is wrong the most, with their fat tax, but the US and Canada have their share of blunders.

Atleast their hearts are in the right place, I still have hope that science will prevail, and eliminate all the private prejudice in this industry.

Here in Belgium it's advised for kids under 4 years to use full fat products: whole milk, margarine, ... instead of skim milk and minarine.

Which makes since, Wouter. Young 'uns need the growth contributions of full fat. Why else would nature have made it full fat? Seriously though, it provides the calories needed for growth, plus, it's pretty well noted that full fat promotes anablic mechanisms of growth provided by hormone stimulation.

It's too bad that they recommend margarine, and not butter. I never could understand why an artificial product gets recommended over something that has been consumed for millenia, especially now that we know the difference between trans and saturated fats.

I know it's normal to recommend full-fat for children, they've got a small stomach and a high need for calories.
That's why I don't get why they'd have to drink skim milk?
And margarine is recommended for the unsaturated fats in it (even though it got transfats, how f'ed up is that?)

PS: I just read a study about how poeple who replaced saturated fats with unsaturated lost fat, while preserving lean mass.

Unsaturated fats include omega 3 and 6. Until relatively recently, these were lumped together in studies. Adding omega 3 to most diets improves health and body composition. Strangely enough, restricting omega 6 has the same effect, mainly because most get too much and it is inflamatory. Only recently are researchers separating saturated fats from trans fats and finding that they're not harmful. I haven't seen any studies that isolate the effect of saturated vs omega 6. It's quite different than trans fats vs omega 3, but that confounds most studies.

whole milk is still approved for kids under 1, as they don't need the fortified water.
