Full-body or split workout?

Post by Kenry52 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 3:39 pm

I'm a 19-year-old college student looking to et back in shape this semester. First of all, I will be doing yoga 2 times a week and taking an abs class that is 30 minutes, 3 times a week and I will also be working in 2 days of cardio a week.

In addition to this, I want to add two days of lifting (monday and thursday). Would it be better for me to do a 2-day split workout, like working my torso on monday and then my legs and arms on thrusday, or would it be better to do a full-body workout each day? If I should do a full-body workout, would it be better to do the same workout both days, or do two different full-body workouts? Thanks!

Hi. Well, strictly my opinion only, but if you only are going to dedicate 2 days to weights, I think you'd be better off doing full body. You already have other apects covered as well. Sounds to me like you're general fitness oriented, rather than hardcore bodybuilding anyway, so I'd suggest the full body, and yes, two separate workouts. It can still be full body while using different schedules. Lots of ways to set that up, and they have good templates here on the site. One quick simple example would be, Day 1, Clean and Press, Pullups, and an ab exercise. Covers upper body push , upper body pull, Lower body ham dominate (cleans). Day 2, more of a standard type thing, Squat benches, rows, maybe toss some direct arm work in. Both are full body, but with different emphasis.
Good training

Kenry52, have you read this: http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html ?
Because unless you're learning some nice parlour tricks like how to crack wallnuts with your abs, I really think you'd be better of doing something else during those 90 min/week.
If you haven't already, you should check this out : http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Instructions.html
