Depending how I do my pushups, my lat muscles feel quite sore. The method which makes them sore is when my elbows flare outwards. Is this right? SHould I do pushups this way or should my elbows be closer in, poionting backwards?

If your back muscles are much weaker than your chest, your chest muscles working will put strain on the back. It's similar to overly strong quadriceps putting strain on weaker hamstrings during sprinting, resulting in pulled hamstrings.

The elbows out pushup puts more emphasis on the chest, while the elbows in works the triceps and anterior deltoid. Keeping your elbows in should reduce the recruitment of the pectorial muscles, which should reduce the soreness in your lats.
