Full Squats

Why is it so few people actually do full squats?
I see plenty of people at the gym doing quarter squats and some half squats but very rarely do I see full squats. I do realize that full squats require more flexibility and it's not as easy to use heavy weight but what happened to full range of motion? Furthermore what's happened to squat racks? Some gyms I have visited recently only have one.
Now I will say that I do know about the going parallel paranoia, but mechanically speaking you put far more pressure on the knees at parallel than but going all the way into the hole.

people can't use as much weight when they full squat so they don't do it. It's an ego thing, sad but true.

don't worry about your knees, squat as deep as you can without your lower back rounding.

I go down til my back starts rounding which is slightly below parallel, anymore and I'd be doing a squat-good morning variation!

Another issue is trainers are 'taught' that full squat depth is a quarter squat. NASM want a 90 degree squat but, with knee flexion this equates to a quarter squat.

They also want close stance, toes forward squatting....

Whatever....

I was showing someone how to squat a few months ago and a friend who is studying to be a high school phys ed teacher was watching. He was shocked that I would suggest going lower than a 90 degree bend in the knee.

Yeah, it's strange and frustrating.

I suspect the full ROM Olympic style squat may be non existent soon. I always thought PL depth was 'high' but, now it's considered 'ass to grass'...

Basic mechanics suggest deep squats hit your lower body more. By going below parallel aka deep squats which i always do :) I hit my glutes so much more.. Thats probably why all the females love the bum...haha

Really though I say go hard or go home no reason to half ass anything.

I have short, thick legs. When I squat I go down until my calves and hamstrings touch. Any lower than that and my calves and hamstrings press against each other causing a prying effect on my knees.

I don't full squat for two reasons - My back curves if I go all the way down (flexibility issue, I'd guess).

And two, I feel like I'm going to fall backwards when I've got 405lbs on my back :p

PS I go down to where the stretch-reflex takes place, which is pretty much the max my flexibility goes to :P
