Weight training advice for arthritic knees

I have moderate arthritis in both knees (patella compartment) and am looking for suggestions for high weight, low rep (3-5) exercises that target the glutes, hips, and quads. I'd like to stay away from anything that involves a squat rack even though I'm familiar with squatting. The gym that I belong to simply doesn't have enough squat racks and there's always people waiting for one to open up. The smith machine is usually available and theres also a landline post that never gets used.

So far, I've focused on romanian deadlifts but was wondering if there are any other movements (barbells or dumbbells) that I could be doing. The only suggestion that my orthopedist has given me is to avoid squatting below parallel and stay away from the leg press (I heard this wasn't good for the spine anyway if doing high weights, low rep).
