Am I doing too little?

Post by tostig » Sat May 14, 2016 4:53 pm

Since getting mild tendonitis of the left shoulder, I’ve replaced my bench press with dumbbell presses.

I met a person at the gym whom I’ve known many years ago at another gym. He’s sort of become my free personal trainer. He told me not to do the squat and the deadlift in the same session, which is also what I read in these forums too. I have also cut out my overhead press because of my shoulder.

So now at the gym I’m doing

Squat or deadlift in an alternate basis
Dumbbell press
Stretching and rotator cuff exercises per my physiotherapist.

That’s it.

Are there any exercises for the pecs that don’t involve the shoulders?

No. The pecs connect the chest to the arm and any movement must involve the shoulder.

Most people prefer not to both squat and DL the same day. Some people only DL weekly ore even less often.

And DB pressing can be a great arm/shoulder/chest lift. You can vary the angle--flat, incline, overhead.

Do chinups bother your shoulders? Neutral-grip pull-ups?

You don't mention any direct core work, like roll-outs, planks, Paloffs. Those are important. How about some upper-body accessory work, like pull-aparts, curls, pull-downs, push-downs? They could add some variety.

Use prilepins chart to calculate how much workload you should be doing to maintain muscle in any area.

Just be careful in doing some excises in the gym.
