I've tried doing 3RM every other week, but found that was too often (too much wear and tear). I've also tried doing sets of 8-12, 8-12, 5 and 3 on censecutive weeks but found that I was stronger on week 3 than I was on week 4. I suppose I could also try 12, 5, 8, and 3. What do you think?

In other words a 4 week cycle with a 12RM on week1, a 5RM on week2, a 8RM on week3 and a 3RM on week4? Of course I'll inevitably stop somewhat short of failure sometimes depending on how I feel that day, but you get the idea. ..... Basically I periodize based on reaching failure at a given number of reps, rather than performing a set number of reps with a given % of my 1RM. Honestly, I don't even know my 1RMs, since I never do singles.
