Hypothyroidism and Weigh Training

Hello Everyone.

I've just started training again after a long time off ill because my thyroid gland stoped working. I now take thyroxine everyday and my levels are back to normal.

I was just wandering if anyone new of any issues my condition may have with training, or anyway i could make my 'slow' metabolism work in my favour?

You have a very good idea, but you should really discuss this with your pjysician. He knows your specifics, and should be able to refer you to specialists. I hate the idea of getting info on the internet and glomming onto it as if it were the gospel. Go to a certified sports-med oriented physican

Mine isn't exactly 100% either. I don't need medication though. For hypertrophy you should have no problem. You just have to bulk clean. Keep your diet real clean and don't go to high on carbs and calories. Cutting fat is going to be a real bitch though. You can probably talk to your doctor about your medication if you have trouble despite a clean diet. Other then that it just means you have to work harder then everyone else. Doubley so if you are insulin resistant or endomorph at all.

Basicaly what your saying is it should be fairly easy to put on muscle but harder to get lean and shed the fat?

At the moment i'm running between 4 and 5 mornings a week pre-breakfast for about 40mins.

On top of that I do a 3 day split with dumbells. Eating quite well with no carbs after about 2pm and plenty of protein from fish, meat and whey shakes.

I guess i'll just have to wait and see what happens!

That should do the trick. If it doesn't, talk to your doctor about it. See if he thinks anything can be done with your medication. Or if he thinks any suppliments might help your thyroid. Even if it is just something temporary until you take some weight off. Just don't try anything until you talk to him.
