I thought you were talking about some kind of impedance machine. So I looked up dexa. How are you going to get one of those for $200? They look awfully big too. Is there some kind of dexa home version?

I'm going to pay for a single measurement, not for the machine.

That just seems enormously wasteful, both of money, and of being unnecessarily irradiated.

People spend 200 like that on plane tickets, stereo equipment, booze, etc. If I choose to buy a measurement, what's the big deal?

I'll go research the radiation exposure, but I'd beg money that you made your comment without having learned how many mrem I will get.

HEre is the wiki on DEXA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_energ ... rptiometry

Sounds like the dose is not that bad. A tenth of a chest x-ray.

There is a cavea about hydration...but I'm WELL familiar with how my weight jumps around based on water-glycogen so I will consider the baseline, intelligently.

Hmmm...I might even see if I can get insurance to cover it! Just something else to enrage JD who wants to triage me into either the "fine" or "fooked" buckets, rather then "fixable". ;)

Well if the benefit as zero, so as long as the risk/cost is non-zero, it's not worth it.

How exactly would my life change if I knew my exact BF%? And how would it be better if I was confident that the number was precise?

JD:

Ironman and I spelled it out. Read the little back and forth we had. The new knowledge will motivate me to drop my weight 5 or 10 pounds.

Note also, that if there is a persistent "offset" in one measurement versus another, I can still use the less expensive one in the future for trending, but with the knowledge of the offset.

In all seriousness, what's so radical about 200 bucks? I never even gave myself any weight loss presents. If I payed 200 bucks for a barbell or some skates or such, you wouldn't object, right?

It's gonna be cool, guys. I will report back and tell you what I learn. We'll see if it was worthwhile or not. Life is about trying things. I mean...it's not like I'm shooting smack or something. :)

Pay me the 200 bucks and I'll tell you your DEXA %. You can then use the less expensive one in the future for trending, but with the knowledge of the offset.

I'd rather have the smack, be a whole helluva lot more fun, and you'd lose weight into the bargain.

The main point is really just so you know how much fat you have to lose.
