I'm excited by my new gym. I've been going to a pretty traditional commercial gym for the last four years or so. Yesterday I tried out the local university gym. It has:
4 squat racks.
3 or 4 lifting platforms.
Bumper plates.
Chalk!
Dedicated stands, near a step (for step-ups).
Plus all the usual machines, barbells, dumbells, etc.
All this for half the price of my current gym (although I have to drive there, I can't go on my way home from work).
So if anyone's ever in Brisbane, Australia (Doc, I know you've been here), try the University of Queensland gym.
I was, however, humilated by the (I presume) high jumper who was doing step-ups next to my deads. He was stepping up my dead lift weight. And was about 6'4" and about the same weight as me at 5'6".

Jebus, if you join the reserves, you'll have free access to the military gym. I would expect the gym in Esquimalt is pretty well equipped.

If the Canadian military basic training is anything like the United States army's, be prepared for it to suck. It wasn't at all like I expected. The worst aspect wasn't getting yelled at by drill sergeants, but the old adage "hurry up and wait", which basically means you must have ALOT of patience, or be so stupid that you don't stop to think about all the waiting on crap you have to wait. I'm sure all military bureaucracies are somewhat similar!
