It doesn't, and far from it. The latest data shows that the US has an average of 3 homicides per 100,000 people a year involving a firearm, the UK at 0.1 and Jamaica at 39.4!!

If you're going to compare a country against a Central American country, anyone would look good. Central America and Caribean countries dominate this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... icide_rate" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Probably a better comparison would be to compare the US to other first world countires like Canada, Australia, Japan or Europe. By that comparison, even Canada looks bad. In Canada's case it's largely gang violence in Western Canada.

I was just refuting Nevages point that the US has more gun crime than any other country.

Every one of the countries with higher murder rates than the US is either a third world country or has recently had a civil war(s).

We were talking specifically about gun homicides. You'd hope that a first world democracy wouldn't come anywhere near the top 50 in the list you linked.

Incidentally the average for the EU on that list is 1.71 with the US coming in at 5.9.

Does anyone know how to find the earliest instance of a quote on the internet? I can't find any search engine that allows you to get the oldest refernce. It seems to me that this would be an important feature to journalists, lawyers and researchers, so there must be a way.

That depends on how you look at it. Economically the US is much closer to Western Europe and Japan, but physically it's much closer to Mexico. That must have some effect considering the murder rate in Mexico is so much higher than that of the US.

If Austria had a murder rate as high as Mexico, wouldn't you expect some of that violence to spill over into neighboring countries?

"We were talking specifically about gun homicides." - Proper Knob

Isn't the total murder rate a more signifigant stat. Dead is dead after all, regardless of the murder weapon.

Also, many of the most violent countries on this list have gun laws that are far more restrictive than those of the US.
