Types of stabilizers (eg. the role of the lats in pressing)

Post by gracefool » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:37 pm

On the website there is no mention in the pressing movements of the role of the lats. However powerlifters know the lats are very important in the bench press (and to a lesser degree in the overhead press). It's often described as a "bounce" out of the bottom of the movement, utilizing the stretch reflex of the muscle.

Should the lats be considered some kind of stabilizer for the movement?

My trainer says so. Powerlifters are thick on the ground at his facility and they all say the same thing.

But what's going on - do the lats actually do anything in the bench press, apart from stabilize the shoulder? Its the pecs that are stretched, not the lats... maybe they're getting bounce out of the compression of the lats?

Stabilization is what they do.
